Richmond, Tasmania, has emerged as a premier "base camp" for golf enthusiasts, offering a sophisticated alternative to staying in the city center. Its appeal lies in its central location within the Coal River Valley, providing travelers with a blend of heritage luxury and rapid access to the state's most prestigious fairways.
The "Golden Triangle" Location
Richmond sits at the apex of a "Golden Triangle" for golf travelers, situated almost exactly halfway between the historic inland courses and the new coastal links.
15-Minute Radius: Within a quarter-hour drive, travelers can reach the high-end coastal corridor of Seven Mile Beach, home to the brand-new 7 Mile Beach Golf Links (opened Dec 2025) and the prestigious Royal Hobart.
Airport Proximity: Richmond is only 15 minutes from Hobart International Airport, making it the perfect first or last stop for interstate golfers flying in with their gear.
The Heritage Hub: Unlike the modern hotels at the airport or the busy Hobart CBD, Richmond allows travelers to stay in 1830s Georgian Prospect Country House Hotel , adding a layer of "Old World" charm to a modern golf tour.
Why Travelers Seek Out Richmond as a Golf Base
1. The "Tee to Table" Experience
Richmond is the heart of the Coal River Valley Wine Region. Golfers frequently choose this location so they can transition seamlessly from an 18-hole round at Seven Mile Beach to a world-class Pinot Noir tasting at a local cellar door just minutes away.
2. Diverse Course Access
Staying in Richmond provides the unique ability to play three distinct styles of golf without ever traveling more than 20 minutes:
The New Frontier: The world-class fescue dunes of 7 Mile Beach.
The Tradition: The manicured championship bunkers of Royal Hobart.
The Local Charm: The relaxed, scenic greens of Coal Valley Golf Links right on the doorstep.
3. A Refined "Adult Retreat" Atmosphere
Travelers seeking a quieter, more sophisticated experience often choose to base themselves at Prospect Country House rather than in the bustle of Hobart. Nestled just moments from the village, this historic estate mirrors the lifestyle of the dedicated golf traveler who values tranquility after a day on the links. Between the refined dining at Buscombe’s Restaurant, the peaceful garden setting, and the proximity to the region’s best fairways, the house offers an "adult retreat" atmosphere that serves as the perfect sanctuary for winding down after a round.
4. Ideal for Day Trips
Beyond the immediate area, Richmond’s position on the A3 highway makes it a strategic starting point for travelers heading north to the Ratho Farm (Australia's oldest course) or further up the coast to the world-renowned Barnbougle dunes.
